Philanthropy is the act of donating money, goods, services, time or effort to support a charitable cause. My interpretation also encompasses any altruistic activity intended to promote good or improve human quality of life.

During the past few years, philanthropy has become more mainstream, not only in the Middle East but also worldwide. A noteable milestone in philanthropy in this region was the recent formation of The World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists. It was formed in the year 2008 with first event being held in Istanbul, Turkey followed by the second in Abu Dhabi, UAE early in 2009. The mission of this congress, as stated on it's website, says, "We aspire to bring together donors for the exchange of ideas and proven practices, and to institute an environment of enduring engagement, wherein; to leverage wealth and influence strategically for the betterment of the world. Our aim is to create a forum where Muslim philanthropists from diverse backgrounds can interact, collaborate, and subsequently become an integral part of the international community of humanitarians."

Elsewhere in the world, philanthropy has grown incredibly, owing in part to the high profile of rock star Bono's campaign to cancel Third World debt to developed nations; the Gates Foundation's massive resources and ambitions, such as its campaigns to eradicate malaria and river blindness; and billionaire investor and Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett's donation in 2006 of $31 billion to the Gates Foundation.

Inspired by several entrepreneurial initiatives, including SME Dubai and microfinancing projects worldwide, I intend to help the underprivileged individuals in a dignified manner which will help them become more self-reliant and less dependent on others. Experience has taught me that this goal can not be achieved only by fund raising for the less privileged, but can also be achieved by making it easier for them to access knowledge which could improve their lives. I want to help them generate money by themselves and help them identify and develop their own natural talents. The whole process is not only physiological, but also predominantly psychological. Helping people feel better about themselves can change lives for good.

My objectives are simple and straightforward:

  1. Empower the underprivileged people by informally educating them about sustainable means of livelihood.
  2. Organize and support awareness campaigns and events aimed at social betterment and improved quality of life.
  3. Create an association with purpose that will bring together individuals who are active humanitarians, volunteers and/or philanthropists.
  4. Your valuable ideas, comments and suggestions are most welcome - please get in touch through the contact page. Thank you.
